If you want to install and configure DNS Server on Windows Server |
Preface
It all begins with Server Manager…
This is the first screen you will see when you log in to a Windows Server and this Screen has the name -Server Manager.

Your windows servers can play many roles and you define the role this server plays through Server Manager. In this example, we will configure our windows server as a Primary DNS Server.
Let’s Begin
Step 1 – Add Roles and Features

Click ‘Next’

Select ‘Role-based or feature-based installation and click ‘Next‘

Select the Server and Click ‘Next‘

Under Roles Select DNS Server
As you select DNS Server, a new page pops us with all the Features to be installed to run DNS Server as shown below.
click on Add Feature Button.

Notification if there is no static IP on the server
In case you did not configure a static IP on the server before, you will receive a notification as shown below, just click continue. You should not get the message if your server has static ip configured.

Go on, Click ‘Next‘

Click ‘Next‘

Click on ‘Install‘ button
Caution! ‘Selecting Restart the destination server automatically if required’ may reboot the production server if selected.

Follow the Progress Bar
Don’t forget to click on ‘Close‘ button once installation is complete.

Exercise for your Eyes – I spy ‘DNS’ word on 3 different places
Once DNS role and features are installed, Locate DNS appearing on 3 different place
However to start configuring Go to Tools > Select DNS ( Follow the arrow)

Start Configuring the DNS
I have joined two screens. After you select DNS under the Tools in previous step.
You will see left window as you click the DNS Server listed, the right window appears with different configuration options.
